Do you buy security? The regulator’s advice

APRIL 2018

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has published a guide to procuring private security services, which can be read here. Their guidance raises some important points, particularly on purchasing security too cheaply.

“Buying cut price security may be appealing at the time but consider the possible consequences. Your brand could be at risk if you buy low quality security that goes wrong. Experience of reporting in the media shows that it is the high profile name of the buyer that makes the headlines, not the security contractor.

If your security supplier provides very low hourly rates for provision of security, this could be an indication of legal requirements being breached – which may impact on insurance cover and have further consequences. The SIA works closely with other agencies and we prosecute offenders through the criminal courts.

Good quality security provision reduces the danger of violent incidents; lower quality provision can raise the risks of harm to your staff and the public as well as potentially damaging your brand. As a responsible buyer you can also play a role by recognising the high quality security provided by people of all backgrounds, ages, abilities and genders.”

ESG Security employs staff directly through PAYE, and does not use self-employed staff. Therefore our security quote takes into consideration all staffing costs, and government legislative requirements, such as holiday pay, pension contributions, Employers National Insurance, SSP and death in service insurance cover. All Security Officers are SIA licenced and ESG Security is a member of the SIA’s Approved Contractor Scheme. ESG Security also holds accreditation with the Security Systems and Alarm Inspection Board, SafeContractor and holds ISO 9001 Quality Management and ISO 14001 Environmental Management.

Our staff are offered regular hours and various incentives to ensure their loyalty and reliability including good appearance and customer care skills. ESG Security’s team deliver customer care training on site, paying close attention to the customers objectives. Uniform is supplied to security staff free of charge, including where appropriate, business suits for front of house duties, and cold weather clothing for staff who spend time outside. In addition, ESG Security have comprehensive insurance cover.
