The Security Industry Authority (SIA) recently launched a public consultation on the fundamental principles of their business approval scheme. The proposal represents a significant departure from the existing Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS). The defining element is the strong emphasis the new scheme would place on public protection.
There are approximately 750 SIA – ACS businesses, with the largest 85 companies accounting for about 40% of the UK private security market and employing around 30% of individual SIA licence holders.
Over the past year, the SIA has engaged with key stakeholders and industry experts through a series of roadshows and roundtables across the UK to inform the regulator’s decision making. Through the public consultation, the SIA is actively seeking input from various stakeholders, including security firms, customers, and standard-setting organisations like the Security Systems and Alarm Inspection Board (SSAIB) and the National Security Inspectorate (NSI).
Steve McCormick, SIA Director of Licensing and Service Delivery, emphasised the need for a new scheme grounded in public safety, given the growing recognition of private security’s critical role. The consultation period will run for six weeks, closing on April 4, 2024 at 11:59 PM.
Following the feedback received, the SIA plans to hold a further consultation on the detailed design of the new business approval scheme. To participate and share your views, visit the SIA business approval scheme consultation page.
